Guelph, Ont
– Second-year forward Rachel Hancock
(Ingersoll, Ont) notched a double-double
with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the
Guelph Gryphons women’s basketball team to
an 84-83 overtime victory versus the Laurier
Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at the W.F.
Mitchell Athletic Centre.
Alex Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) added 18
points and five rebounds for Guelph who
snapped a three-game losing streak and move
to 7-12 on the season. Floor general,
Morgan Jean (Sarnia, Ont) scored 10
points for the team and was the driving
force behind the Gryphons win. |
”Morgan was brilliant at the point. She controlled our
procession and flow and allowed us to be very effective
in getting the ball to Alex (Russell) and Rachel
(Hancock),” commented Head Coach Angela Orton.
Renata Adamczyk led the Golden Hawks (9-9) with 24
points and a game-high 14 rebounds and was impressive
from the free-throw line making 6-for-6.
The
Golden Hawks gave the Gryphons a tough battle from start
to finish. Laurier held a five point lead (71-66) with
just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Led by
clutch foul shooting from Kris Yallin (Port Colborne,
Ont) and Alex Russell and a basket inside the paint from
Rachel Hancock, the Gryphons came back to take a 76-73
lead. But Laurier’s Amanda MacDonald drained a
three-pointer with 2 seconds left to send the game into
overtime.
Guelph
took the quick lead in extra time but found themselves
down by one with 15 seconds left, when Heather Angus (Waterdown,
Ont) made a lay-up under the net to give the Gryphons
the 84-83 advantage. Laurier attempted a game-winning
basket with 4 seconds left, but the ball was blocked.
Laurier outrebounded Guelph 40-43, but the Gryphons held
the advangage on the defensive glass, 24-20. Guelph
shot 43.8 percent from the field and held Laurier to
just a 34.7 percent clip.
Guelph hosts the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday. Tip off
is set for 1:00 p.m. at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic
Centre. The Warriors enter the contest with a 9-9
record and defeated the Gryphons in their first outing
this season 69-53. The Gryphons are still in the hunt
for the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA West.
”Overall it was a great team effort and great team win
tonight. We can still make the playoffs and we’re just
going to take one day at a time,” said Orton. “We play
Waterloo this weekend. We didn’t play well at Waterloo
a couple of weeks ago but we’re going to prepare for
them and put up our strengths against their strengths
and see what happens.” |
