Mustangs drop shocker to UOIT in
shootout but make amends in
dominating win over York
By Josh Sweetland
LONDON,
Ont. - The Western Mustangs
(12-2-0-2) managed to shake off a
humbling shootout defeat at the
hands of UOIT on Nov. 30, with a 4-1
victory over the York Lions
(6-7-2-1).
With
the victory, Western solidifies its
position in first place of the OUA's
tight Far West Division. The
Lakehead Thunderwolves (12-3-0-0),
who defeated the Mustangs twice in
Thunder Bay earlier this season, sit
in second place, two points behind.
The
Lions gave Western fits early, with
Matt Passfield (Mississauga, Ont.)
streaking down the right wing to
beat Brad Topping under the blocker
halfway through the first period.
With Vitaly Lanochkin (Toronto,
Ont.) serving a hooking minor,
Marcus Smith (Markham, Ont.) would
unload on his 3rd goal of the season
with assists from Kyle Piwowarczyk
(London, Ont.) and Jesse Boucher
(Markham, Ont.).
The
Mustangs took control of the second
period early, as Kyle Lamb (Port
Coquitlam, BC) notched his 5th goal,
and moments later Kevin Richardson
(South Surrey, BC) gave Western some
insurance with his 13th. With the
goal, Richardson extends his lead in
CIS scoring over Concordia's Trevor
Blanchard (Sudbury, Ont.) to 2
points.
Jeff
Martens (Maple Ridge, BC) would
round out the scoring with a third
period goal from Adam Nemeth (Amherstburg,
Ont.).
Former
Memorial Cup winning netminder Carlo
DiRienzo (Woodbridge, Ont.) was
tough to solve in goal for York. He
turned away 36 of 40 shots on the
evening, while former New York
Islanders draftee Brad Topping
(Strathroy, Ont.) was beaten just
once on 33 York attempts.

Mustangs capitalize, trample Gaels
4-1
Giving not a priority for Stangs
headed into Holiday Season
By Josh Sweetland
LONDON, Ont. - Paul Cook's Western
Mustangs women's hockey club came
into Saturday afternoon's battle
with the Queen's Golden Gaels on a
five game slide. With losses to
Toronto, Guelph, Brock and Laurier,
Western (5-7-3-0) was looking to
make an example of a Queen's
(6-7-3-0) team that shares a similar
position in the standings.
Kailey
Hooker (Mississauga, Ont.) would
initiate the scoring at 13:39 of the
opening period. Hooker notched her
2nd of the season off a bouncing
puck that found it's way past
Queen's netminder Katie Boyd
(Richmond Hill, Ont.).
Holly
Ouellette (Toronto, Ont.) would
strike next at 15:45 of the first
with her 3rd of the season. Danielle
Le Ber (London, Ont.) was stellar in
goal early, making several key saves
on odd-man rushes for Western.
Andrea
LeBlanc (Newmarket, Ont.) would
shift the momentum before the
conclusion of the first period with
a quick goal on a pass from Katie
Duncan (Hudson, PQ). Queen's played
with more tenacity to enter the
second frame, taking control early
and keeping netminder Le Ber active.
Bianca Emanuele (Mississauga, Ont.)
would put the Mustangs further ahead
with a powerplay marker at 1:26 of
the second. Queen's however, would
control much of the second period.
The
Mustangs would escape the unfriendly
confines of the second with a more
consistent third period. Boyd was
chased from the Queen's goal at 6:56
after allowing a weak rebound to
award Kaley Sisler (Arkona, Ont.)
with her 1st goal of the season.
Melissa John (Unionville, Ont.)
would be forced to make 9 third
period saves before Western nailed
down the coffin, controlling the
flow of the third period. The final
frame soon became a nasty one, with
a great frequency of stick
penalties.
With
the upcoming schedule looking
promising, Western will try and get
back into the upper tier of the OUA
standings. The purple and white face
UOIT (1-13-1-1), Brock (4-10-3-0),
Windsor (7-7-1-1) and York (5-7-2-0)
in coming weeks.
The
team is back in action tomorrow
afternoon at Thompson Arena when
they face the struggling UOIT
Ridgebacks (1-13-1-1). UOIT has
allowed a league high 71 goals this
season, certainly a figure that
should interest the Mustangs. Game
time is 4pm.
