Hunt makes 44 saves Mustangs get revenge on Waterloo

Western beats team that knocked them out of post-season
in 2006-07 despite missing key players

LONDON, Ont. - Ryan Hare had a pair of goals while Keyvan Hunt made 44 saves as the Western Mustangs defeated the Waterloo Warriors 6-3 at Thompson Arena on Oct. 25

Hunt, a rookie netminder from Coquitlam, B.C., was spectacular in his first home start making 22 saves on 23 shots in the opening frame, vital in killing off a 5-on-3, to help Western to the victory. Hunt finished with 44 saves for the win. Jimmy Bernier (Baie-Comeau, PQ) was steady for Waterloo despite allowing five of the six goals, making 30 saves.

All of Waterloo's goals came on special teams - one shorthanded and two on the powerplay.

Kevin Richardson (Surrey, B.C.) took a pass from defenceman Patrick Ouellet (Baie-Comeau, PQ) and rifled it upstairs, stickside on the powerplay with 8:39 left in the first period to give Western the 1-0 lead. Hunt was spectacular and frustrating the Warriors' shooters early. After Western opened the scoring, Waterloo tried to shake the Western rookie goalie.

Warrior forward Sean Roche (Ottawa) ran Hunt and took a needless penalty which Western failed to capitalize on. Hunt needed equipment repairs but wasn't effected.

Mark Hartman (Bacarres, Sask.) tied the score at 1-1 late in the first with a powerplay marker after some pretty passing but it was the only blemish on Hunt's record in the opening 20 minutes. In the second, Jeff Martens (Maple Ridge, B.C.) buried a beautiful feed from rookie Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) to make it 2-1, 7:40 into the second period.

Lamb stole the puck from Waterloo defenceman Joel Olszowka (Bonnyville, Alta.) behind the Waterloo net with the help from an aggressive forecheck from both Lamb and teammate Kyle Piwowarczyk (London, Ont.) to create the opportunity.

David Edgeworth (Kingston, Ont.) converted on a second-effort goal after teammate Kevin Hurley worked a shorthanded two-on-one to his advantage, handcuffing Hunt with a wrist-shot that left a juicy rebound the crease to tie the game at 2-2.

Ryan Hare (Sarnia, Ont.) deflected the puck into the open net with just under five minutes remaining in the second to re-establish a one-goal lead for Western.

With an opportunity to tie the game, Warriors defenceman Sean Moir (Calgary, Alta.) hit the post late in the period during some four-on-four play but Western held on to lead 3-2 at the break.

In the final period, Western didn't get a shot until four minutes in when they capitalized on their first shot of the period.

Luc Martin (St. Thomas, Ont.) caught Bernier flat-footed and opened up a two-goal lead for the Mustangs to make it 4-2. His goal proved to be the game-winner. But Edgeworth backhanded his second goal of the night, this time on the powerplay, going upstairs on Hunt to make it 4-3 Western midway through the third. Sal Peralta (Leamington, Ont.) scored the insurance goal on a beautiful breakaway deke to pull Bernier out and bury it home with 2:40 left to give Western the 5-3 lead and the win.

Hare added an empty netter with 50 seconds left for the 6-3 final.

The Mustangs lost all four regular season games to Waterloo in 2006-07 and fell in the best-of-three OUA Western semi-final series 2-1.  Western (4-2) travels to play at winless Windsor on Saturday night Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Waterloo falls to 3-3.
