Amateur Competitors of All Ages Set to Compete at the Canadian Open of Fishing

This month, a total of 60 amateur anglers will compete alongside 60 professional anglers during the first two days of the inaugural Capital One Canadian Open of Fishing, presented by Shimano. Scheduled to take place from July 25-27 in Sarnia, the tournament’s amateur field will feature competitors of all ages and levels of experience.

Michael Kent, 15, (Cookstown, Ont.) is the youngest amateur competitor entered in the tournament.  A member of the Barrie Bassmasters fishing club, Kent has eyes on pursuing a professional angling career.  The Capital One Canadian Open of Fishing, presented by Shimano, will be his second Canadian fishing tournament following an appearance at the 2007 Balsam Lake Pro-Am event.

Village of Point Edward Mayor Dirk Kirkland, 76, is the most senior amateur angler competing in the event.  An avid angler, Kirkland has been the Mayor of the region for the past 12 years.

As part of the tournament format for the Capital One Canadian Open of Fishing, presented by Shimano, the amateur angler with the highest cumulative weight from the first two days of the event will be declared the amateur champion.
