The Sarnia Legionnaires ended
the regular season Saturday with
a victory over the Lambton
Shores Predators that put them
one win over the .500 mark for
the campaign.
The Legion crew won 5-2,
finishing the Western Jr. 'B'
hockey schedule with a record of
23-22-2-3.
With the loss, the Preds were
mathematically eliminated from
the post season.
Sarnia started the game strong,
with Ryan Vendramin scoring his
24th of the season on a
two-on-one break to give the
visitors a 1-0 lead less than
six minutes into the opening
frame.
Brandon Layman and Brock Perry
assisted on the play.
Ethan Sarfati squared matters a
few minutes later, but
defenceman Eric Marsh scored
late in the period with a hard
drive from the blueline to put
the visitors back out in front.
Captain Hunter Tyczynski and
Ryan Trottier set up the marker,
which was Marsh's fourth of the
year.
Sarnia played an undisciplined
second period, taking a number
of needless penalties, one of
which led to a goal by the Preds
Gino Mini.
In the third stanza, with the
game tied 2-2, Tyczynski picked
up a loose puck on the lip of
the crease and poked it home to
give the Legionnaires the lead
for good.
Trottier and Jordan Fogarty got
helpers on the goal, which was
Tyczynski's 11th of the season.
With less than five minutes
left, Brendan Shegena made it
4-2, rifling a drive under the
crossbar after taking a pass
from Joey Zappa. Alec DeKoning
also assisted on what was
Shegena's fourth of the year.
Brandon Layman rounded out the
scoring a little later with a
drive from between the faceoff
circles. The tally was his 24th,
tying him for the team lead with
Vendramin. Vendramin and Konnor
Roskovich drew assists.
Coach Mark Davis used both of
his goalies, with Shayne Battler
getting the win. In all, Battler
and Aidan Hughes faced 38 shots.
The Sarnia had 30 shots on Preds
goalie Anthony Hurtubise.
