STRATHROY – Brandon Layman's
four-point night paced the
Sarnia Legionnaires to a 6-5
double overtime win over the
Strathroy Rockets here Saturday.
Layman scored an unassisted
first period goal, then set up
three other tallies to lead his
club to its 17th victory of the
season.
The veteran forward out-raced a
Rockets D-man to a loose puck at
centre ice, then streaked into
the clear before denting the
twine from close range. It was
his 18th goal of the campaign.
Later in the stanza, with
Strathroy leading 2-1, Layman
grabbed a loose puck behind the
Rockets net and found rookie
Ethan Dupont in the slot. Dupont
made no mistake, roofing his
fourth goal at the 16:25 mark.
Captain Hunter Tyczynski gave
Sarnia its first lead just 12
seconds into the middle frame
when he accepted a passout from
linemate Brendan Shegena and
fired home a drive from between
the faceoff circles. Joey Zappa
also had a helper on the play.
In the final frame, Zack
Vanderwal scored his 4th of the
year on a broken play that saw
the puck slide into the net
almost in slow motion. Jordan
Fogarty and Layman were credited
with assists.
But Strathroy scorced twice in
quick succession to take a 5-4
lead before the period was six
minutes old.
Eric Marsh got Sarnia back on
even terms just before the
mid-point of the third when he
charged the goal, lifting the
rubber into the cage a split
second before the net came off
its moorings. For Marsh, a
defenceman, it was his second of
the year.
In overtime, rearguard Brad
Yowart scored the winner, firing
a blast from the faceoff circle
for his eighth of the season.
