CAMLACHIE – Sawmill Creek
Golf Resort and Spa is
pleased and honoured to
announce they will be the
host golf course for the
2010 Royale Cup Canadian
Junior Girls’ Golf
Championship.
This prestigious event will
be held August 3rd-6th
and will feature over 150 of
the top female junior
golfers from across Canada.
This tournament has been in
operation since 1955.
It is believed this will be
the first time ever a RCGA
event like this has been
held at any golf course in
the Sarnia-Lambton area.
Sawmill Creek owners Dan
Odorocio and Anthony Alberga,
the employees of the club
and the 400-plus members are
excited about the Royale Cup
coming to our area and are
looking forward to a great
week of golf.
The event will also give an
economic jolt to the
Sarnia-Lambton community as
well as providing some
outstanding golf for golf
fans to enjoy. The best part
for golf fans is there will
be NO admission charge.
This will be the first time
our national junior girl’s
championship will be held in
the Sarnia region and the
RCGA are very excited to be
coming to such a vibrant
golf community and a great
course at Sawmill Creek Golf
Resort.
Fans who come out to this
event can expect to see
impressive golf being played
by the best young women
golfers from across Canada,
many of whom will go on to
play high-level college golf
and perhaps one day become
professionals.
The field will be comprised
of 156 players, all under
the age of 19. As of August
6th spots in the
field are open to any junior
girl with a Handicap Factor
less than 17.4. They are
currently accepting
registration at
www.rcga.org/championships.
The winner of the
championship will receive
the Brokenshire Trophy in
addition to the Royale
Champion’s Trophy which
honours the three female
national amateur champions
for the year (Junior,
Amateur, and Senior). The
top 4 finishers at each
provincial junior girls
championship will also
compete in a concurrent
inter-provincial team
championship over the first
two days of competition.
Championship History:
With over
50 years of history, the
Canadian Junior Girls’
Championship continues to
produce top calibre players
who contend years later for
amateur and professional
titles. Top Canadian
golfers like Sandra Post,
Marilyn Palmer (O’Connor)
Gayle Hitchins (Borthwick)
and Alena Sharpe all saw
early success at the
Canadian Junior Girls’
Championship.
Heather
Kuzmich remains the top name
in the Canadian Junior
Girls’ Championship record
books by boasting four
consecutive championship
wins from 1981 to 1984.
Kuzmich, Lisa Meldrum and
the legendary Mabel Thompson
are the only three women to
ever accomplish a
‘four-peat’ in Canadian
Women’s amateur golf
history. (Mabel Thompson
earned four amateur titles
while Meldrum won a single
junior and three amateur
titles).
The
Canadian Junior Girls’
Championship has been
conducted since 1955 and has
also been referred to as the
CLGA National Junior
Championship.
Previous Junior Girls’
Champions:
Many have
raised the Brokenshire
Trophy from the likes of
Heather Kuzmich, who
collected a record four
straight titles, to the most
recent winner Lindsay
Caljouw.
Legendary golfers who have
etched their names on the
Brokenshire Trophy include:
Sandra Post (1964-1966),
Gail Harvey (1958-1960)
Gayle Hitchins (1959, 1960,
1962). Recent winners like
Lisa Meldrum of Kirkland,
Que., (2000) and Alena Sharp

starting to touch on the
potential first recognized
at the Canadian Junior
Girls’ Championship.
