Debbie Hands

Born: Oct 2, 1955 - Petrolia, Ontario

Sports: Hockey, Softball, Broomball


Hockey Player
Debbie’s hockey career began at the age of 9 when she started playing for the Petrolia Girls Hockey Team.  In 1966 she went to play for the Point Edward Supremes and was coached by Hall of Fame Inductee Lenora Dunham.  Debbie played for 15 years with the Supremes and during that time the team played in several leagues in the  Michigan/Ontario Ladies Hockey League and Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League Senior A Division.  Debbie earned the All Star Defencemen Award in the 1975/76 and 1976/77 seasons.  In her final year as a player Debbie played for the London Gem’s Senior A Ladies Hockey Team in the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League.

 

Hockey Official (1985 – Present)
Debbie began refereeing ice hockey in 1985 in the Ontario Women’s Hockey  Association, Ontario Minor Hockey Association and in 1994 for the Alliance Hockey Association.  Debbie has a Hockey Official Level IV and became a Referee instructor/supervisor for the O.W.H.A in 1992.

Debbie has refereed Women’s Hockey at a Local, Provincial, National and International Levels that include:

Women Nationals – 1988 (Burlington, Ontario),  1992 (Verdun, Quebec),
                                 1994 (Ottawa, Ontario), 1995 (Summerside PEI), 
                                 1997 (Richmond B.C.), 2004 (Sherwood Park, Alberta)
1990 – Women Worlds (Ottawa, Ontario)
1991 – Canada Winter Games (P.E.I.), Ontario Winter Games (Barrie)
Ontario Winter Games 1991 (Barrie), 1995 (Niagara Falls) & 1998 (Peterborough)
CIAU – Women Nationals 1999 (Toronto), 2000 (Montreal)
2001 – Under 18 Women National Hockey Challenge (Three Rivers, Quebec)

Baseball Player
Debbie’s softball career started with Enniskillen in 1967 winning the Most Improved Player award with the Petrolia Pepie’s and Pizza and the Moorecentre Ladies Fastball Teams.  The Moorecentre Junior’s were Finalists at the Jr. C. P.W.S.U. Championship in 1974 when she won the All Star Right Fielder Award.  In 1978 the Moorecentre won the Southwester Ontario Intermediate Championship which led to the Intermediate A Provincial Championship in Toronto winning the bronze medal in 1981.

Softball Official  (1982 – 2008)
Debbie became an umpire in 1982 and officiated at many Provincial & National Championships that included:

Senior Ladies Provincials – 1988 (Dorchester), 1993, 1994 (London)
Junior Ladies Provincials – 1994 (London), 1995 (Brampton)
Senior Men’s Provincials – 1996 (St Thomas), 1997 (Owen Sound)
Junior Women Canadian Championships 1995 (Saskatchewan)
Senior Women Canadian Fastball Championship 2001 (Owen Sound)

 

Broomball
Debbie played broomball from 1969 – 1979 with the Lambton County Junior Farmers Co-Ed league. She won the All Star Left Wing award in 1972 in Seaforth, Ontario.

In 1979 & 1986 she played for Hyatt’s Fuel and won the Lambton Ladies Broomball League Championship. Debbie won the Best Defenceman awards in 1986 & 1988. She competed in the Ontario Winter Games in St. Catharines in 1985.   Debbie also refereed

Broomball starting in 1987 and was selected to referee in the Provincial Broomball Championships in Simcoe (1988), Emburn (1989) and Thunder Bay 1992)
