2018 Joe DeRush Memorial Award
The Joe DeRush Memorial Award and Scholarship is presented each year to recognize local athletes with disabilities who performs in competitive events at the regional, provincial, national or international level.  This athlete displays leadership qualities both on and off the field, with the team, in his or her school and within his or her community. Criteria includes:  performance, leadership, positive attitude, sportsmanship, dedication and fair-play philosophy.

 

Rob Hughes

 

Rob Hughes, a standout wheelchair athlete who has cerebral palsy, has won this award for his success at the Paralympics, Cerebral Palsy World Championships and Para Pan American

Games.
 

For nearly two decades he was a full time para-athlete, travelling the globe to take part in the Paralmpics, Para Pan Am Games and the Cerebral Palsy World Championships.  He retired in 2016.
 

In addition to his sporting accomplishments Rob earned diplomas from Sheridan and Lambton College. From there he landed a job with Lambton Elderly Outreach.
