Sarnia
bantam Pacers took part in the Sarnia Herb Lea
tournament. The Bantams were the only Sarnia team
to advance to the finals and they should be proud of
their efforts.
After losing their opening game to the eventual
tournament champs, Orilla 10-1, the Pacers bounced
back winning the next 3 games.
In the first game on Friday evening, the Pacers were
not ready for the strong Orillia team. Orillia
scored early and often in the first period and
gathered a 7 goal lead. Sarnia was able to regroup
in the second and third periods allowing only 3 more
goals and scoring one of their own. Ryan Devine had
the only Sarnia goal on a perfect long pass from
Ryleigh Taylor.
Saturday morning, the bantams were up against Centre
of Wellington. Sarnia held a two goal lead going in
to the second. The teams traded goals in the second
and giving Sarnia a 3-1 lead going in to the third.
CoW scored to come within a goal but Darian
Chappelle scored an empty net with just seconds left
on the clock to seal the deal for the Pacers. Sam
McCormack and Ryan Devine assisted on the goal.
Other goal scorers were Blain Adams assisted by
Jeffrey Williams, Sam McCormack unassisted, Alex
Lambkin assisted by Darian Chappelle. Final score
4-2.
After a team gathering, the boys went back to work
against Innisfil. A 4-3 win secured the Pacers a
semi final game Sunday morning. Goals were scored
by Alex Lambkin from Darian Chappelle, Kevin Durco
unassisted, Blain Adams from Darian Chappelle and
Cory Burr from Alex Lambkin. With the win, Sarnia
finished 2nd in their division.
Sunday morning the Pacers had a rematch with C of W
in semi final action. The game was close throughout
the first and second period with Sarnia having a 4-2
lead going in to the third but Sarnia would pull
away with a 4 goal period to take the game 8-2.
Strong goaltending by Reese Landeryou and hard
defence by Kraig Durco, Jacob Huggett, Alex
Lambkin and Callahan Doughty helped the Pacers take
the win. Scoring for Sarnia was Sam McCormack
unassisted, Ryan Devine assisted by Darian Chappelle
and Ryleigh Taylor, Cory Burr from Darian Chappelle
and Sam McCormack, Ryan Devine with his second of
the game from Ryleigh Taylor, Kevin Durco assisted
by Ryleigh Taylor and Cory Burr, Alex
Lambkin unassisted, Sam McCormack with his second of
the game from Kraig Durco and Kevin Durco with his
second of the game from Sam McCormack.
Sarnia was off to the championship game with another
rematch. They were up against Orillia who they had
met in the first game of the tournament. Things
were not quite as easy for Orillia as in the first
game. The Pacers came ready to play. The score was
even at 1-1 after the first, with the Pacers down
one after the second period with a 4-3 score.
Pacers scored to tie the game in the third and with
a 5 minute major with just over 5 minutes to play
handed to Orillia, the fans were thinking power play
goals...however, a short handed goal seemed to take
the wind out of the sails for the Pacers and were
unable to capitalize against a strong aggressive
Orillia team. With the Pacer goalie on the bench, Orillia
scored to go up by 2. This exciting game ended in a
6-4 loss for the home team. Scoring for the Pacers
was Blain Adams assisted by Ryleigh Taylor and
Jeffrey Williams, Ryleigh Taylor from Cory Burr,
Cory Burr assisted by Ryan Devine and Alex Mayhead
and Alex Lambkin unassisted. Reese Landeryou had an
outstanding game in the net for Sarnia in a losing
effort.
Head Coach Kerry Adams summarized the weekend. "We
started the tourney off against a very talented
group and spent a period watching and never
recovered. The loss made us have to go unbeaten to
get to past the round robin part of the tourney and
the kids stepped up and took care of business. Two
tight hard fought wins, with solid defence , goal
tending and timely goals. The semi final was against
a team we barely beat in round robin play and the
boys came out determined and played their best game
of the year. The final was an excellent game that
wore both sides out and we came up a little short.
The coaching staff was very proud of the teams
effort and the boys should hold their heads high
after a great weekend." |
