OWEN SOUND – A depleted
Sarnia Sting lineup was no
match for the Owen Sound
Attack Saturday night.
The Attack posted a 7-1
victory over the Sting
before 2,710 fans at the
Harry Lumley Bayshore
Community Centre.
Sarnia is winless over their
past 10 games in the Ontario
Hockey League.
The Sting began the game
with just 15 skaters as they
were missing six regulars,
including three players who
were injured in Friday
night’s game with Niagara.
They included two defencemen,
Kyle Flemington
(concussion), and Anthony
Donati (shoulder), along
with forward Ben O Quinn
(separated shoulder). Also
missing were Daniel
Broussard (shoulder), Brent
Sullivan (head) while
forward J.C. Campagna was
away due to the death of his
grandfather.
That left just three regular
defencemen in Nathan
Chiarlitti, Ron Soucie and
Joe Rogalski. Then
Chiarlitti was injured in
the first period and did not
return. Forwards Miroslav
Preisinger, Peter Stevens
and Craig Hottot were used
back on the blue line.
Stevens was involved in a
fight on his first shift.
“This may sound ridiculous,
but we didn’t play that bad
of a game,” said Sting head
coach Dave MacQueen. “We had
41 shots and the scoring
chances were pretty even.
But it didn’t get any easier
when Nathan went down and we
had three forwards playing
defence. They didn’t do that
bad of a job.”
MacQueen knew his team was
in tough.
“We are in tough when we
have all our regulars in the
lineup. Our main goal right
now is to get some bodies
back. We seem to be dropping
like flies.”
Sarnia had one new player in
the lineup, left-winger
Braden Kavaratzis. He was a
sixth round pick of the
Sting (110th overall), in
the 2009 draft. He’s playing
this year with Toronto Jr.
Canadiens of the Central
Tier Two Junior A Hockey
League.
The five-foot, 10, 190 pound
Kavaratzis has 14 goals and
five assists in 40 games
with Toronto this season.
“He had a real good training
camp for us,” said MacQueen,
“This is a great opportunity
for him. He will be playing
some games with us the rest
of the season to see what he
can do.”
He added, “I know he was
nervous before the game, He
got to play a lot and he
seems like he competes hard.
We didn’t expect a lot from
him tonight.”
The Attack held a 2-0 lead
after the first period and
5-1 after the second.
Shayne Campbell played two
periods in goal for the
Sting allowing five goals on
31 shots. Jordan Gladwish,
who plays for the Mooretown
Flags junior C team played
the third period. He allowed
two goals on nine shots. One
of the goals was on a
breakaway.
“Awesome,” was Gladwish’s
reaction when asked about
playing. “I was nervous, but
after making the first saves
I was a lot better.”
Joe Rogalski scored the lone
Sting goal late in the
second period tipping home a
pass from Zack MacQueen. It
was Rogalski’s fifth goal of
the season.
Scott Stajcer was the
winning goalie as he made 40
saves.
Bobby Mignardi led Owen
Sound with two goals while
Jesse Blacker, Joey Hishon,
Marcus Carroll, Ben Dubois
and Michael Halmo added
singles. Two of the goals
came on the power play.
Next action for the Sting is
Friday when they host
ex-captain Jordan Hill and
the Saginaw Spirit beginning
at 7:35 p.m. at the RBC
Centre. The two teams meet
again Saturday night in
Saginaw while Sarnia will be
in Windsor next Sunday to
battle the Spitfires at 2
p.m.

- Sarnia native Curtis
Crombeen was out of the
Attack lineup after
suffering knee injury at the
world under-17 tournament in
Timmins. The defenceman was
Owen Sound’s first round
draft pick this year. He has
one goal and three assists
in 40 games.
- Sarnia’s overall record
fell to 14-32-2-1 while
their road record is
7-16-1-1.
- Owen Sound is 2-0 against
the Sting this year. The two
teams meet two more times
next month with both games
at the RBC Centre.
