The Sarnia
Sting pulled
off their
second major
deal of the
weekend on
Sunday
night.
The Sting
dealt
overage
goalie Adam
Courchaine
and second
year forward
Brett Appio
to the Erie
Otters in
exchange for
three draft
picks, a
fifth round
pick in
2010, a
third
rounder in
2011 and a
fourth
rounder in
2012.
This deal
comes 24
hours after
the Sting
traded
captain
Jordan Hill
to the
Saginaw
Spirit in
what turned
out to be a
fourth round
pick in
2010, fifth
and sixth
round picks
in 2011,
along with
defenceman
Kyle
Flemington.
“It’s always
difficult
for us to
make a deal
like this,
but as an
organization
we are
trying to
re-coup as
many assets
as we can to
move
forward,”
said Sting
head coach
Dave
MacQueen.
“We made the
trade for
Courchaine
to be a
steadying
influence
for Shayne
Campbell.
Adam not
only did
that, but
also gave us
a chance to
win. We are
giving him a
chance to
finish is
Ontario
Hockey
League
career on a
high note
and maybe go
a couple of
rounds of
playoffs.
“As for
Brett, he’s
kid with
high, high
character.
He’s very
likeable and
very
coachable.
He would do
anything for
the team and
it’s
difficult to
part with a
player like
that. But
Erie was
looking for
a power,
gritty
forward and
with what
they
offered, we
couldn’t
turn it
down.”
Appio was a
12th
round pick
of the Sting
in 2007
while
Courchaine
was acquired
in the
off-season
from the
Ottawa 67s.
Courchaine
posted an
8-16-1-1
record and a
3.51 goals
against
average for
the Sting.
He had a
.899 save
percentage.
Appio, 18,
appeared in
35 games and
had one goal
and three
assists. He
was second
on the team
in penalty
minutes with
119.
With the
trade
deadline at
noon on
Monday,
MacQueen
doesn’t
expect to
make any
more moves.
“We
accomplished
what we
wanted to do
and that was
build up our
drafts and
were able to
get a young
defenceman
in Kyle
Flemington.
Unless we
got some
offer that
knocks our
socks off,
that’s it.”
