2023 Joe DeRush Memorial Award
The Joe DeRush Memorial Award and Scholarship is presented each year to recognize local athletes with disabilities who performs in competitive events at the regional, provincial, national or international level.  This athlete displays leadership qualities both on and off the field, with the team, in his or her school and within his or her community. Criteria includes:  performance, leadership, positive attitude, sportsmanship,

dedication and fair-play philosophy.

 

 

Andrew Brimmer
 

Andrew Brimmer has been selected as the winner of the Joe
DeRush Award, which goes to athletes with physical disabilities.

Brimmer has been with Special Olympics Sarnia for five years
taking part in recreational and basketball, soccer and bowling
events. He has also taken part in regional tournaments in all three of
those sports.

Tana Manchester of Special Olympics Sarnia summed up Brimmer well, saying, "Andrew is an exceptionally skilled athlete. He shows determination to improve and is a natural leader, mentoring and forming friendships with his team-mates. He responds to coaching with an eagerness to be a team player, and above all else, Andrew
shows positive sportsmanship."
